Diamond lost by UPS may put jeweler out of business
If your clients ask why we insist they use USPS Registered-Insured, please share this story.
From KSN - Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend but they’re John Richardson’s way of life. At his business, Diamond Mine Jewelers, John repairs and refines diamonds for vendors. John says his company ships about six to eight boxes a week. He normally uses UPS with no problems, until about two months ago. “One of the diamonds didn’t make it back to the vendor,” said John. It was a three-carat diamond valued at about $18,000. “After three days, the owner called and said ‘hey did you ship that package back because I have someone who wants to look at it.’” John tracked his package with the last stop in Whites Creek, Tennessee. What happened after that is a mystery. Still, he didn’t panic. “I have a jeweler’s block insurance policy which covers all the items in my store. It says it covers mailings but I found out it was just the U.S. Post Office and not all of my mailings.” And John did not insure the shipment through UPS. UPS is only offering $100 for his loss and the owner of the diamond is demanding his money. “It’s taken every bit of liquid cash I have in the store plus about $8,000 out of my personal savings account to pay for it.” John says he simply wants ups to find out who stole the diamond so he can prosecute to the fullest extent of the law. If not, John says he will be forced to close his doors. “I probably won’t be in business because of this.” UPS representatives explained the company offers insurance coverage up to $50,000. The price is 55-cents for each $1,000 value.
