NY Thieves buy $400K in diamonds with stolen CC info
From Rapaport - Two men in Queens, New York, were apparently phoning-up consumers with Asian “sounding surnames” and posing as representatives from national credit services company Equifax. The consumers, many of whom turned out to be immigrants from Bangladesh, provided private information to the men, including credit card numbers. According to criminal charges against the two men, prosecutors claimed in court papers these credit card numbers were then used to purchase a total of about $400,000 in diamonds. The two men would intercept the shipment of diamonds at the address of each card holder. New York police arrested the two, Marconian Sockwell, 22, of Jamaica, and Joseph Ogueri, 27, of Queens Village. They face 88 counts of fraud and criminal conduct, including a hate crimes charge because victims were targeted for their ethnicity, and are expected back in court on November 13.
