Congratulations to Peter Yantzer, Jose Sasian, Jason Quick, Jacob Sheffield, Jim Caudill and everyone at AGSL: Their report “Evaluation of brilliance, fire and scintillation in round brilliant gemstones” appeared in the September issue of Optical Engineering, the monthly journal of SPIE. The journal publishes peer-reviewed papers reporting on research and development in optical science and engineering and the practical applications of known optical science, engineering, and technology. Frank Dallahan of AGS Laboratories said that “having the report published in a journal as prestigious as Optical Engineering gives AGS Laboratories important recognition and backing by the scientific community that the AGS Cut Grade so deserves.”

Brian Gavin (Brian The Cutter) and I had the opportunity to read the AGSL piece last summer. It is a great overview of past and ongoing research into illumination effects associated with diamond beauty, and shows why the Tolkowsky cut, and other cuts adjacent to it along the main cutter’s line, are the best round brilliant cuts.  Download the paper here.

We are humbled by the efforts of the dedicated researchers out there. Thank you AGSL, and congratulations on the recognition.
