When I first moved to “U-stun” 14 years ago, it would have helped if I knew just a few of the “rules”. So if anyone plans to move here, or to come in to visit us at Whiteflash…….here are some “insider tips” you might find handy! BTW, if any of you have any “rules” of your own to add, feel free to do so!

RULES WHEN VISITING HOUSTON

* You must learn to pronounce the city name. It is U-stun.
* When arriving at the airport your gate is at least 32 miles away from the main Concourse & baggage claim. Make sure to wear comfortable cowboy boots!
* Forget the traffic rules you learned elsewhere. Houston has its own version of traffic rules…
* All directions start with, “Go down to Loop 610″ - which has no beginning and no end.
* The morning rush hour is from 6 to 10 AM. Lunch time traffic begins at 10:45 AM & lasts till 2 PM.
* The evening rush hour is from 3 to 7 PM. Friday’s rush hour starts Thursday morning. NO JOKE.
* When yours is the first car at a traffic light when it turns green, do not proceed until you count to five. This will help you avoid getting hit by all those who are running the cross-traffic’s “yellow” light.
* Kuykendahl and Fuqua Road can ONLY be pronounced by a native.
* Construction on I-10, I-45, US 59 & Loop 610 is a way of life & a permanent form of entertainment. Construction crews aren’t doing their job properly unless they close down all lanes except one during rush hour.
* All unexplained sights and smells are explained by the phrase, “Oh, we must be in Pasadena!”
* The minimum acceptable speed on Loop 610 is 85. Anything less is considered downright sissy.
* Beltway 8 has no limits; it’s where the professionals come to practice for NASCAR.
* Never honk at the driver of the car with the bumper sticker that says, “Keep honking, I’m reloading.” In a court of law that is considered fair warning in Texas!
* If you’re in the left lane and only going 70 in a 60 mph zone, that’s not a finger waving Hello as people pass.
* If it’s only 100 degrees, Thanksgiving must be next weekend.
