nosenseclock.jpgFor everyone who set their clock back looking forward to that extra hour of sleep, or who showed up to work an hour late…you’re a week too soon. Typically Daylight Savings Time is the last week of October, but thanks to the 2005 Energy Conservation Act set forth by President Bush, we won’t be gaining that extra hour of sleep until next weekend.

Some computer software, cellphones and other electronic equipment that are programmed to automatically change will have to be manually reset Monday morning back to Daylight Saving Time, then changed back one hour next Sunday (I say some becuase there some companies that were actually prepared to move the switch to next weekend).

Oh and something to keep in mind…the 2005 legislation also changed the “spring forward” of Daylight Saving Time by one week. (more…)

osu logoAfter losses by formerly #1 LSU and the former #2 Cal Bears, the Buckeyes have clawed their way to the top of the AP Poll and the BCS rankings. A combination of an easy 48-3 win over outmatched Kent State on Saturday and losses by the top two teams in the poll vaulted the Buckeyes to #1 in the land of college football. Barring any unforseen bumps in the road, the Buckeyes have the ability to keep the #1 ranking and a shot at another national title…all they need to do is ‘win out’ the rest of their schedule. Ohio State has 5 games remaining this season (3 at home in Columbus), the biggest of which should be the annual clash with the Wolverine Cubs of Michigan (you remember them….the first team to lose to a Div. I-AA school in history). 5 for 5 should assure the Buckeyes a date to the National Championship in New Orleans, LA on January 7, 2008. If they can run the table, who they’ll dance with is still a mystery…only time will tell. BUT…if the season ended today, it would be the Buckeyes vs. Boston College. Based on the way things have played out this season, no one seems to be a lock to get to the title game—but the Buckeyes are looking awfully good—their defense is more stifling than an overzealous girlfriend, while their offense seems to be picking up steam.

Keep it up Buckeyes…your destiny is in your hands.

LSU logo

LSU is #1 in the AP Poll for the first time since 1959.

After a 34-9 win over Tulane on Saturday, LSU took the top spot from the USC Trojans–who were a victim of their own sloth, eeking out a meager victory over unranked Washington 27-24.

Apparently the panel of voters didn’t think much of the Trojans half-hearted victory–ranking them #2 in the land, even though the Tigers had to overcome a slow start of their own, leading by a paltry 10-9 at the half over their cousins from New Orleans.

This during a weekend filled with upsets, where 5 of the top 10 teams suffered losses that sent them plummeting in the polls. After all the dust settled, the Tigers came out on top–setting up a monster game this Saturday where the #1-ranked Tigers will face #9 Florida in the swamp. (8:00pm EST-CBS)

Oh–and the Buckeyes have jumped to #4 in the polls. Sorry Traci….but I’m a Gator fan this week. ;)

7000 ct. diamond?

A diamond mine in South Africa is claiming to have unearthed the world’s largest diamond7000 carats!!—which, if confirmed to be real, would be twice the size of the previous world-record holder, the Cullinan Diamond, which was discovered near Pretoria in January 1905 and weighed about 3,106 carats uncut. The stone is said to be the size of a coconut and greenish in color. The Cape Times newspaper received an e-mailed photograph of the supposed stone on a table in a room. (pictured)

Diamond experts were eagerly awaiting images of the stone which was being transported under tight security to a vault in Johannesburg, where it would be photographed. Experts are, however, skeptical about the claim. A spokesman for De Beers said the northwest province was not known for producing gems and greenish stones were even rarer.

‘If it’s true it’s the find of the century,’ said Les Milner, a leading gemologist at the Jewelry Council of South Africa grading laboratories. ‘Even if it’s of bad quality it’s the find of the century.’

Another teardrop installment.  This time it’s round earrings with pear teardrops. The diamonds included are a 2.08 ct D VVS1 pear ($26664), 2.05 E IF Pear ($25943), 1.18 ct D VVS2 round ($13386) and 1.14 ct D VVS1 round ($12544). Those are 2004 prices. They would be higher today. What a great project. Yum.

Some of you were talking about teardrop necklaces and earrings.  Here is a 2.63 G SI2 (amazing-clean SI2) pear-teardrop necklace we did for a client back in May.

I think this photo is hilarious.  It was taken by one of Traci’s clients - don’t know if it was staged or not.  Either way it’s great.

The signature item in our Whiteflash Design is the Champaigne Pave. Here is a comparison shot between the original Champaigne and the Petite Champaigne.  I showed these to my wife and she responded by telling me that the next time we celebrate something, this is the champagne she wanted to see!

Now these are some diamonds I can get on board with…

Apparently Computer Choppers of West Linn, Oregon is putting together a diamond-encrusted MacBook Pro. Yes…the entire laptop. At this point, they’ve only completed the logo section of the laptop (pictured). VERY COOL.

According to their website, turnaround time is 2-3 weeks (it can be custom made with other stones as well). Available in gold or platinum. Oh..and the logo allows the light behind it to shine through.

Update: Just heard back from Computer Choppers (thanks for the fast response gentlemen). For the logo only: The size, shape, and type of stone are up to the buyer. The design is customizable–they draw a design and pattern based on the options you choose. The Apple logo pictured is approximately 3.00ctw. White gold will run you around $2200 and platinum puts you up around $2400-$2500. I’ll take 5…..as long as Whiteflash is picking up the tab. ;)

Somehow I get the feeling you won’t see hopeful brides asking for a 2ct. rough diamond in their engagement ring(s)…

This from the Wall Street Journal:Rough Rock in Ring

“From Tiffany to De Beers, a new look in diamond jewelry is on the rise: uncut diamonds that to the untrained eye can look more like gravel than gems.

Known as rough diamonds, these are the stones in their natural state, before they’ve been cut with the facets that give diamonds the sparkle, brilliance and clarity they are known for. In colors from milky white to yellow, green and brown, the large, uneven stones often have a cloudy appearance.

At De Beers’s three U.S. stores, which started offering rough-diamond jewelry two years ago, one of every five pieces sold now features rough diamonds. A $45,000 rough-diamond necklace is displayed prominently in the window of the company’s Fifth Avenue store in New York. Meanwhile, Bergdorf Goodman added rough diamonds to its jewelry selection last September. Retail prices for rough-diamond jewelry vary considerably, from $600 for a small uncut diamond set in a stainless steel ring at De Beers to $750,000 one-of-a-kind necklace of pearls and rough diamonds by Frank Gehry at Tiffany. This guy must feel like a real heel.

From Reuters:

LONDON - Teacher Dave Barclay flew thousands of miles across the Atlantic to Wales to attend his friend’s wedding, only to discover he was a year early.

wales.jpg

Barclay, 34, was told about the wedding earlier in the year and assumed it was to take place in 2007.  It was only when he had flown into Cardiff from Toronto, Canada, and rang the bridegroom seeking details of the venue that he discovered the wedding was in 2008.  “I am a year early — yeah, my mates are loving it, aren’t they,” he told BBC Radio Wales.  The groom, Dave Best, had emailed his friend at the start of the year.  “He just said July the 6th and I assumed it was this year because if you tell the guy July 6th, they’re going to think it’s this year,” Barclay said.  Barclay, who has been teaching in Toronto for three years spent $1,015 on his premature flight.  “At least it’s assured me a mention in the speech next year,” he added.

Good thing for Skilling, Fastow, and Causey that Enron wasn’t based in China. If this doesn’t deter crime I don’t know what will…

From the International Herald-Tribune:

The Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court carried out the death sentence against Zheng Xiaoyu, 62, the former head of the State Food and Drug Administration, shortly after the country’s Supreme Court rejected his final appeal.

zxiaoyu-1.jpg

Zheng, who had appealed his May 29 sentence on the grounds that it was “too severe” and that he had confessed to the bribery charges against him, became the first ministerial-level official put to death since 2000 and only the fourth since China opened it doors to the outside world nearly 30 years ago.

The official Xinhua press agency announced the execution but did not say how Zheng was killed. In most cases, the court police execute prisoners by shooting them in the back of the head, though recently the police have also used lethal injections.

China carries out more court-ordered executions than the rest of the world combined, according to human rights groups. But even by local standards, the sentence against Zheng was unusually harsh and its execution uncommonly swift.
